A Backroad Kind of Day
Ethridge, Tennessee • July 17, 2026
While my babygirl was here visiting, we took a drive down to Ethridge to spend the day in Amish country.
We rode the backroads, stopped at different places along the way, and came home with all kinds of food we'd bought from the Amish. You can't take pictures of the people themselves, so most of my pictures from that day are of the land around us — and honestly, it was beautiful enough all on its own.
There were green fields, horses, old barns, ponds and farms everywhere we looked. It was quiet and simple, and one of those days when I was perfectly happy just riding around seeing what we could find.
But as much as I loved exploring Ethridge with her, the best part of this day actually came later.
Just the Three of Us
Later that evening, we met up with my Babyboy for dinner, which meant I got something I hadn't had in what felt like forever — both of my kids together, all to myself.
We sat outside the restaurant eating, talking and laughing, and at some point the two of them got into one of those conversations where they each had completely different opinions. I mostly sat there listening while they went back and forth, each making their case, disagreeing with each other but still actually listening to what the other one had to say.
And I remember just watching them.
Somewhere between raising them and everything life had thrown at the three of us, my babies had grown into these two young adults sitting across from me with their own minds, their own opinions and their own ways of looking at the world. Hearing them banter back and forth while still respecting each other's point of view made me realize all over again what good people they'd grown into.
I missed them both terribly, but I missed my son in a different way because I get to see him even less. Having both of them there at the same time was rare enough. Having them to myself, just the three of us, made it even more special.
For a few hours, I didn't feel like I was trying to build a life hours away from my kids.
I was just Mom again, sitting at a table with both of my babies. And God, I had missed that.
